Repeaters and Signal Boosters

Repeaters

Repeaters are devices that are specifically designed to extend the range of a network by picking up a signal and passing it on to the next device. Repeaters are quite versatile and can be used to transport a signal around radio opaque objects or join clusters of devices that cannot communicate with each other.

Signal Boosters

Signal boosters are used to increase the total range of a unit. They increase the output power of a signal without affecting the direction of the transmission. Boosters are best used in situations where a number of devices are outside the range of each other and it is not possible to place a repeater between them. It may be required that boosters be installed on multiple devices in order to allow them to communicate. The image to the right shows an example of where boosters might be used.

High-Gain Directional and Semi-Directional Antennas

Directional antennas are best used when wireless networks need to expand between two buildings or there are large areas where no devices can be installed. Directional antennas focus the power of their transmissions in one direction so the signal travels further. Directional antennas can be used in conjunction with signal boosters to increase the range even further.
